Artists' Statement

The process of painting for me is a journey - one that takes me out of my everyday world and absorbs me in entirety. A fantastic sky, the light on a field, interesting shadow patterns or an idyllic reflection on water, these are what propel me to paint. It is my job as an artist to slow down, to observe, to look harder, always searching for ways to bring this beauty to the surface of my paintings.

With each new painting, I push myself to reach for new discoveries. I look for the dramatic elements in a landscape and interpret them in a loose, impressionistic manner. If a scene is beautiful, I strive to make it even better by sharpening the contrast, intensifying the colors or by creating an entirely new sky or land mass that makes the piece more compelling. I paint in oil because of the richness of the color, its density and its ability to add texture and depth to my paintings. I render my skies with vigorous interwoven brush strokes to form a tapestry of color. Every painting brings its own triumphs and frustrations, making each unique and a place of discovery within itself.

Winston Churchill was an accomplished artist as well as a statesman, and he so compassionately writes, "Painting is a companion with whom one may walk a great part of life's journey". My journey as an artist continues.

Every painting brings its own triumphs and frustrations, making each unique and a place of discovery within itself.
